5 Ways To Give Back This Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is all about giving thanks. Many of us are lucky enough to sit down to a good meal with friends and family, but some many are not as fortunate, which makes this the most important time of year to give back.

Making a contribution to your community during the holidays, no matter how big or small can make a huge difference. From volunteering your time, to donating goods, there is no shortage of ways to make a difference this Thanksgiving, and below are just a few we have found to be incredibly rewarding.

1. Volunteer At Your Local Homeless Shelter or Soup Kitchen

This might be the most obvious option, but it truly is a small way to make a really big difference. Make it part of your family tradition, and get back more back in gratitude than you could ever imagine. Soup kitchens see an influx of volunteers during the holidays, but it’s important to remember that hunger is a year-round problem, so don’t ever feel like you need a reason to give back.

2. Spend Time At A Nursing Home

The holidays are meant to be a joyous time spent with family. For many though, who might not have any more family around, the holidays can be a really sad depressing time. Spending your afternoon at a nursing home paying cards, sharing stories or getting to know someone who might not have anyone else may leave you with a lifelong connection. There is nothing more special than time, and sometimes your time means more than anything.

3. Invite Someone To Join You For Thanksgiving Dinner

The holidays are about being inclusive with everyone around you. Know of a lonely coworker, an elderly neighbor, or your child’s out-of-state college friend? No one should spend the holidays alone. Invite them to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner with you and your family.

4. Clean Up The Environment

Make it a family affair, and spend a few hours cleaning up your community over the long Thanksgiving weekend. You’ll be making your neighborhood a cleaner place for everyone to appreciate, and the kids will love it!

5. Play With The Animals At Your Local Shelter

Pets need love, too! The Humane Society is always in need of volunteers to clean, play with, and walk the animals.  Go one step further and foster a pup in need so he/she can join you at your Thanksgiving dinner. I mean, who doesn’t love to snuggle with cute cats and dogs?
