Fonuts: The Healthy Donut
What’s the hot new food trend in LA? Healthy donuts? Yep, its not an oxymoron its true. Meet the “fonut“. It is a baked donut made with fresh ingredients. Fonuts opened up shop on August 24 and has become all the rage for WeHo hipsters. Part of the Fonuts allure is the vegan and gluten-free options. And let’s face it, the healthy donut is sooo “LA”. It fits our diet just right. I loved the Chocolate-Hazelnut which is wheat and gluten-free and vegan. The texture is like a cake, with frosting that is not that sweet. One of the owners is the former four-star pastry chef at The Bazaar.
Wheat and gluten-free flavors include banana-chocolate, chocolate-hazelnut, lemon and peach, the latter two are also vegan. The cake fonut flavors arechorizo and cheddar, strawberry buttermilk with strawberry yogurt glaze, rosemary with olive oil powder, and one that is simply rum. The raised fonuts include maple-bacon, peanut butter and chocolate, and filled holes of peanut butter and jelly, plus, the Hawaiian with a coconut filling. Pair your fonut with LaMill coffee. I love the Fo-Shaken which tastes like Vietnamese iced coffee.
