Best New Colors: Pantone Has Crowned Not One, But Two Signature Colors For 2016
In case you missed the news, this year, for the first time ever, Pantone has crowned not one, but TWO colors as it’s 2016 Color Of The Year. Pantone chose a softer take on color in comparison to previous years, with its introduction of Rose Quartz and Serenity. Pantone explained that joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate the balancing act between a warmer embracing rose tone and a cooler tranquil blue which reflects connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace. I’d have to say I think these are exactly the colors the world needs right now.
Pantone Color Institute executive director Leatrice Eiseman emphasized the importance of looking at them together, during a recent interview. “We do keep our finger on the pulse of what people are talking about, what they’re saying, how they’re feeling and we try to really answer those needs so the symbolism of each color is very important to us.” she said. “These colors have the opposition of warm and cool, they speak to health and wellbeing and all the positive aspects that are so necessary in our lives today with all the turmoil that’s going on. People are looking for something that will soothe and calm us.”
Further explaining the psychological aspects of Serenity and Rose Quartz, she said, “When you use colors that are at opposite sides of the color wheel, what you’re doing is reinforcing the opposite color. You’re reinforcing the serenity, the tranquility that the blue contains putting pink with it. You know the beauty of the blue sky. And you’re doing the same thing for Rose Quartz, by complimenting it with a cooling element on the opposite side of the color wheel. It’s a delicate balance that exists between the two and they support each other. Support is an important word.”
The secret to mastering Pantone’s Color of the Year combination? Seek out individual items to make your own combination. Rather than trying to seek out items containing both shades, mix and match individual pieces from your wardrobe and create your own spin on sophistication as you step into the new year!
“Rose Quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure,” Pantone says on its website. “Serenity is weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times.” We couldn’t agree more. As these colors become more prominent in the world, as well as our wardrobe, we really are feeling relaxed.
Fortunately, the soldout Sephora Pantone collection is suddenly back in stock so grab these lip colors while you can! We also gathered our favorite picks below to help you step into 2016 ahead of style and a bit more laid back. Here’s to 2016!
